UC-Irvine got 21 points from Mamadou Ndiaye and 17 points from Luke Nelson to race past Norfolk State, 80-62, in the championship game of the WestStar Bank Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational on Tuesday night at the Don Haskins Center.
Irvine (10-4) used its size advantage to outrebound the Spartans, 47-33, and also held them to 27.6 percent shooting from the field.
The 7-foot-6 Ndiaye was 8 of-9 from the field, had nine rebounds and blocked five shots, while Nelson was 6 of 12 from the field and hit four 3-pointers.
"We played well in both games at the tourney," said Nelson, who was named the tournament Most Valuable Player.
