EUGENE, Oregon — Tobi Amusan's goal in this World Athletics Championships was to hit a peak at this meet instead of a month from now and in the process earn her first major medal.
She hit a peak in Sunday's 100-meter hurdles semifinals no one has hit before. Two hours before the Nigerian's scheduled race in the finals, the UTEP alum and El Pasoan ran a time of 12.12 seconds, breaking a six-year-old record of 12.20 held by American Kendra Harrison at the London Olympics.
Amusan is believed to be Nigeria's first world record holder and the second UTEP athlete to hold a world record after long jumper Bob Beamon.
