One promising game under new coach Matt Wells doesn’t mean Texas Tech’s decade-long slog through the Big 12 wilderness, one that has been going on since Mike Leach’s chaotic departure in 2009, is over.
After all, a characteristic of former coach Kliff Kingsbury’s six-year tenure was quick starts, so the proof for the Red Raiders won’t be their 45-10 opening win over Montana State, or how they play against UTEP Saturday at Jones Stadium, but how they sustain matters in November.
That said, they sure look to be pointed toward a better place than the mostly perennial mediocrity that has defined the past nine years.
