Smith thrives at UTEP after surviving Katrina

Throughout this rough season, the UTEP football team has shown a trait that will serve them well the remainder of the season that is now 2-6.

They don't lie down. They don't quit. They keep fighting.

Senior safety Dashone Smith, for one, wouldn't be here if he was a quitter.

He's survived worse than 2-6; worse than losses to Old Dominion and Florida International.

In 2005, Smith survived Hurricane Katrina. He survived months of uncertainty when his father Roger, a New Orleans fireman, stayed behind to help those who, unlike Smith and the rest of his family, couldn't escape the city.
