For more than a decade, the winds of conference realignment haven't reached El Paso.
There's now a reasonable chance that could change, with the Big 12 considering expansion that would trigger a domino effect that at least presents the chance UTEP could land in the Mountain West.
The most likely way that would happen would be for the Big 12 to bump up four schools to 14, which under terms of their television deals with ESPN and FOX potentially could mean a $100 million a year windfall through the 2024-25 season.
The general consensus is that BYU, Houston, Cincinnati and Memphis are the most likely four, but both Boise State and Colorado State have also been mentioned and would give BYU a partner in the region.
