UTEP alumnus Churandy Martina won the European Athletics Championships in the 100 meters on a day when El Paso native KeAndre Bates advanced to the triple jump finals at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
Martina, representing the host nation Netherlands, turned in a time of 10.07 seconds to edge out, by the narrowest of margins, Turkey's Jak Ali Harvey, who was clocked in the same time. Jimmy Vicaut of France was third in 10.08 at the four-day meet in Amsterdam.
Martina, a native of the Caribbean island of Curacao, has represented the Netherlands since 2012 when Netherlands Antilles disbanded its Olympic federation, and he is the first Dutchman to win gold in the 100 since 1938.
