Linebacker was supposed to be a problem this year for the UTEP football team. Thanks to high-performing players like Jumar Smith, it's a strength. Bret Bloomquist/El Paso Times
This might be hard to fathom right now, but just two months ago linebacker might have been the biggest question mark on the UTEP football roster.
Jumar Smith was a backup then, the undersized (5 feet 10), overperforming spark plug working to catch the eye of a new staff.
One way to catch their eye is to be close to where the ball is every play, and time and time again, that started happening.
