EUGENE, Ore. - Emmanuel Korir's season, and perhaps his UTEP career, ended in bizarre but ultimately triumphant fashion at the NCAA Track and Field Championships Friday evening.
As expected, the heavily favored freshman cruised to a victory that in the final meters looked as routine as could be. The strangeness came with 200 meters to go when he and his teammate and friend, Michael Saruni, got tangled, sending Saruni to the track.
Saruni got up and jogged home to take eighth as Korir outkicked a field he said he didn't even feel.
