Fred Carr, UTEP football's highest drafted player, dies at 71

Former UTEP Miner and Green Bay Packer Fred Carr died Monday, according to a news release by the university.

He was 71.

Carr was a linebacker with the Miners and led them to Sun Bowl victories in 1965 and 1967.

After he left UTEP, he was drafted in 1968 by the Green Bay Packers in the first round with the fifth overall pick.

“There is no question that he is the greatest college football player in the country,” former Green Bay Packers head coach Vince Lombardi said on draft day.
