Gil Bartosh, a legendary Texas high school football player and coach who took over at UTEP from 1974-76, died Saturday in Liberty Hill, Texas, at the age of 86.
Two seasons after leading Odessa Permian to a state championship and a mythical national championship in 1972, Bartosh was named head coach at UTEP and was the WAC co-coach of the year in 1974. That year he led the Miners to a 4-7 record a year after they went 0-11. The next two years were not as successful, as UTEP went 1-10 each year and Bartosh moved on to Midland Lee.
