Former UTEP basketball star Ralph Davis dies

Former UTEP star Ralph Davis, who played a pivotal part on the 1992 Miner team that reached the Sweet 16, died Friday after a battle with cancer.

A 6-foot-6-inch forward who played his entire UTEP career for Don Haskins, Davis averaged 9.8 points across 122 games from 1990-91 through 1993-94, including 7.2 as a sophomore part-time starter on the 1991-92 team.

He scored 12 points with seven rebounds as the sixth man in the upset of No. 1-seed Kansas in the second round of the NCAA tournament that sent UTEP to the Sweet 16.

As a senior, he averaged 16.
