One current UTEP track athlete, one signee, one who ran for the Miners this year and five other alums will represent six different countries at Tokyo's Games of the XXXII Olympiad starting in two weeks.
"It's always exciting to have so many of our former student-athletes and, in this case, a current student-athlete and one we just signed competing in the Olympics," UTEP track coach Mika Laaksonen said. "I feel like this group of former UTEP student-athletes at the Tokyo Olympics is very potent with three to four true medal contenders in it."
Alums Blessing Okagbare (Nigeria, 100 meters), Tobi Amusan (Nigeria, 100 hurdles), Michael Saruni (Kenya, 800) and Emmanuel Korir (Kenya, 800) are the medal contenders he's referring to.
