SALT LAKE CITY — It was another successful season opener for No. 5 Utah gymnastics, beating Penn State 197.175-194.45 in front of 13,193 fans on Saturday. The Red Rocks’ score was the nation’s third-best in the opening week.
“Hitting a 197 in the first meet is a great start to the season,” Utah co-head coach Tom Farden said.
MyKayla Skinner led the way for Utah as she won the all-around (39.70) and three events. MaKenna Merrell-Giles helped complete the sweep by taking the beam title; she placed second in the all-around with a 39.575 score.
The Red Rocks got off to a solid start with stick after stick on vault.
