SALT LAKE CITY — For weeks, Utah gymnastics has been talking about its desire to be national contenders.
The fifth-ranked team proved that the country should take notice as it opened the season with a big 197.0-194.275 win against in-state rival BYU on Friday. It marked the third time in school history and first time in 13 years that the Red Rocks scored in the 197s for their season-opening meet.
“For where this team’s goals are, this was a fitting start,” co-head coach Tom Farden said.
Sophomore MyKayla Skinner, who’s been fighting a head cold all week, and junior MaKenna Merrell-Giles tied for the all-around title with 39.
