SALT LAKE CITY — Three more stories from the world of sports.

Polish discus thrower Piotr Malachowski won silver in his event during the Rio Olympics. Instead of keeping it as a reminder of his grand athletic achievement, he sold it — and for a worthwhile cause.

Malachowski put his medal up for auction beginning last Friday. The money was so a 3-year-old Polish boy named Olek Symanski could receive the proper treatment for retinoblastoma.

According to ESPN, Malachowski’s goal was to reach $84,000 to help pay the rest of the estimated $126,000 in treatment costs (about $42,000 had already been raised).
