Utah fell behind in the first 19 seconds of its inaugural Division I lacrosse game and lost 21-6 to Vermont on Friday afternoon in front of 3,215 fans at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
Josh Stout scored three goals for the Utes, who have moved up from the sport's club level. The lacrosse team made the Utah athletic program's first NCAA debut since the women's soccer team in 1995.
Vermont, picked to finish third in the America East Conference, went 12-4 last season and was ranked as high as No. 12. The Catamounts scored a season-high 17 goals against Sacred Heart in 2018.
