Utah Valley University inaugurates its first female president

Orem • With a wave of green pompoms from the crowd, Utah Valley University inaugurated its first female president Wednesday.

Astrid Tuminez now officially takes the helm of the Orem school with an enrollment that has ballooned in recent years to become the largest in the state. As the university’s seventh president, she will oversee a sprawling campus of more than 37,000 students with a top-tier teaching program, a competitive business school and a popular open admissions policy.

“We will not be afraid or embarrassed to achieve,” Tuminez said. "I know in my gut and my heart that we can do that.
