Las Vegas • Trey Kell scored 15 points, including the go-ahead basket with 45 seconds remaining, to lead top-seeded San Diego State to a 71-65 over ninth-seeded Utah State on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Conference tournament at the Thomas & Mack Center.
The Aggies led by five with 5:50 remaining but failed to score from the field again. The Aztecs made eight of 10 free throws in the final 10.3 seconds to put the game away.
Lew Evans scored 17 points to lead Utah State, which finished its season with a 16-15 record.
