Washington • Sen. Mitt Romney will address some of the “big picture” challenges America faces in his first speech on the Senate floor on Tuesday morning.
The Utah Republican, a freshman who has served for six months, will also speak about his Senate tenure so far, his office said.
Romney, a former Massachusetts governor and 2012 Republican presidential nominee, may be a junior senator low on the seniority totem pole but he commands a strong position as somewhat of a free-wheeling spirit in the GOP-controlled Senate.
While mostly backing President Donald Trump’s agenda and sticking with most fellow Republicans on votes, he has been occasionally critical of the president, including opposing a potential pick for the Federal Reserve, joining Democrats to vote against a judicial nominee and criticizing Trump’s threatened tariffs against Mexico.
