USU vice president to chair newly-formed USDA council

LOGAN — Mark McLellan, vice president for research and dean of graduate studies at Utah State University, has been named the inaugural chairman for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Science Advisory Council.

“It is an honor to be selected for this role,” McLellan said in a statement. “The challenges set forth in the initial focus of this science council will likely have extensive impact on researchers supported by USDA. They reflect major concerns across many disciplines, not just agriculture.”

The Science Advisory Council is a part of the office of the chief scientist at USDA and was created from a December 2012 recommendation sent from the President's Council of Science and Technology "Report to the President on Agricultural Preparedness and the Agriculture Research Enterprise.
