Teenager in custody after arson fire damages LDS church in Orem

An 18-year-old Lindon woman is in custody after an arson fire at an LDS meetinghouse in Orem early Friday.

According to police, smoke and flames were reported at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel near 1200 North and 1000 West shortly before 1:50 a.m. Officers were able to douse the flames using the building’s fire extinguishers, but the blaze did “significant” damage to the meetinghouse, said Lt. Craig Martinez.

“A few blocks away, the officers saw someone walking away,” Martinez said. “She was carrying a gas container.”

The woman was arrested and booked into the Utah County Jail for investigation of arson, burglary, criminal mischief and possession of burglary tools.
