South Salt Lake police’s main department phone number has been spoofed by scammers trying to trick people into sending them money, the agency announced Friday.
Police said the scammers call someone, spoofing the main department number, 801-412-3600, and tell whoever answers that a loved one has been arrested and needs bail money or a lawyer.
“We as the police department would never call and solicit funds,” police said in a news release.
Police are investigating the calls, but said this type of case is hard to solve because it’s “almost impossible to trace the call to its real origin.
