Salt Lake City's Kelsey Chugg, the defending champion, lost 1 up to Shannon Johnson of Massachusetts in Thursday's final match of the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur at Norwood Hills Country Club in St. Louis.
Johnson birdied two of the last three holes, ending a back-and-forth match. Chugg twice was 2 down, but immediately responded each time by winning the next three holes. The second run sent her 1 up through No. 15, but Johnson tied her on the par-4 No. 16 and then won on the par-5 No. 18.
Among golfers who were living in Utah at the time, Chugg would have become the first player to claim two USGA titles.
