Provo • Ten years ago, Jake Taylor set the Utah state record in the 100-yard backstroke. He finished with a time of 49.87 seconds, and while some swimmers have been close since, no one has been able to break that coveted 50-second threshold.
That is, until Sky View High senior Jake Walters, who just so happens to be Taylor’s protégé, did it Saturday at the 4A state swimming championships at Brigham Young University. Walters finished the 100 backstroke in 49.49 seconds, winning the state title in that event, automatically earning All-America status, and realizing a dream he’s been working toward for years.
