Luz Escamilla, 41, is the vice president of community development at Zions Bank and a state senator who has spent more than a decade serving in the Utah Legislature. She first came to Utah from Mexico as an international student more than 20 years ago and became a U.S. citizen in 2004. In 2014, she challenged Republican Rep. Chris Stewart in a race for the 2nd Congressional District, winning the Democratic nomination but losing in the general election.
