A combined 35 caucuses held opening ceremonies together at a largely empty Cottonwood High School auditorium on Tuesday and applauded lightly as some local candidates spoke. Then a former GOP presidential nominee was introduced.
Romney didn’t speak, but he waved as he sat quietly in the front row of his local Holladay Precinct 23. That seemed appropriate because his neighbors there said they are solidly behind him.
It was an interesting moment among the hundreds of political-party caucuses held around the state Tuesday. Experiences of Romney and his top Democratic opponent, Salt Lake County Councilwoman Jenny Wilson, exemplified the politics of meetings that begin the process of electing candidates.
