Man accused of using piece of wood to attack police officer at Riverton school

A 21-year-old man is suspected of attacking and injuring a Unified Police Department officer Monday at a middle school in Riverton.

“He took a couple hits to the head with a piece of wood," UPD Sgt. Melody Gray said of the officer. "He’s going to be fine.”

Gray said that wood was some kind of branch or lumber, about 2 inches wide by 2 inches thick. The man was carrying it at South Hills Middle School, 13508 S. 4000 West in Riverton.

At about 1:50 p.m., a school resource officer saw the man walking around the school.
