The last, and best known, defendant in what prosecutors say was the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints effort to scam a federal welfare program appears in court Thursday.
Lyle Jeffs, a former bishop in the polygamous sect, is scheduled to discuss the status of his case. He is scheduled for trial Sept. 14 on charges of conspiracy, money laundering and flight to evade prosecution.
But Jeffs’ lawyers have asked U.S. District Court Judge Ted Stewart for a 120-delay. They want more time to review the evidence, according to a brief the defense lawyers filed this week, and to examine whether their client suffers from brain damage.
