Three WNBA teams were fined Thursday for wearing black warm-up shirts.
Players from the Indiana Fever, New York Liberty and Phoenix Mercury were fined $500 each for wearing the shirts, and the teams were each fined $5,000 for violating the league’s dress code.
The shirts were in response to violent events around the nation, including the shooting deaths of five police officers in Dallas, and recent police-involved shootings of African-Americans in the nation. Some of the shirts worn by the Liberty bared #BlackLivesMatter and #Dallas5 across their chests.
The Dallas Wings wore #DallasStrong warm-up shirts that featured the Wings’ logo and colors before their game against the Minnesota Lynx on July 17 at College Park Center, but they were not fined.
