The volleyball team (7-3) opened the 2019 Maverick Invitational with a 3-1 win against Chicago State University on Friday at College Park Center.
Hitting errors plagued both teams for much of the match. UTA finished with a 0.172 hitting percentage and Chicago State hit 0.098.
Blocking played a key part in the Mavericks’ play, head coach J.T. Wenger said, with 11 blocks that led to scoring for UTA. Wenger said players needed to challenge the block more to help mitigate the hitting errors on the night.
Sophomore middle blocker Bre Walp and freshman outside hitter Meredith Fisher led UTA with seven blocks each, helping alleviate the absence of veteran middle blocker senior Madison Hill, who was out.
