The family of former UTA softball player Melissa Boerner could be seen having an emotional moment at the start of the inaugural Boerner Invitational.
Boerner’s parents stood in the circle at Allan Saxe Field as they watched Melissa’s brother throw out the first pitch to senior catcher Reagan Wright.
“It was touching,” head coach Peejay Brun said. “I never had a chance to know her, but I think her story is big.”
Boerner was killed in a car accident by a drunken driver in 1998. She was only 21 years old at the time of her death.
