The Movin’ Mavs wheelchair basketball team has built a tradition of winning over the years, and now the Lady Movin’ Mavs have the same opportunity after winning their first national championship.
Jim Hayes, former Movin’ Mavs head coach, founded the program in the 1970s when the team was known as the Freewheelers. Under his watch, the team won seven national championships, the last one coming in 2006. Hayes passed away in 2008 at 58 years old.
Current Movin’ Mavs head coach, Doug Garner, said the program’s success began when UTA began offering scholarships to play for the Movin’ Mavs.
