USC football off to early start on Saturday

LOS ANGELES >> Coffee, bagels, football.

When USC hosts Utah State on Saturday, the game comes with an earlier wakeup call. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m.

“That’s taking it back to Pop Warner,” senior safety Chris Hawkins said.

It is less common in college football.

For USC, it marks the earliest start time for a home game since the school began tabulating records in 1950.

The Trojans have not started a game at the Coliseum before noon since a 1998 contest against Purdue. That one began at 11:30 a.m.

The scheduling quirk comes as the result of a crowded conference slate for Week 2 that includes more games.
