LOS ANGELES – For the last couple months, the assumption stood that the man to replace quarterback Cody Kessler would be Max Browne.
Browne was a former five-star prospect, enrolled a semester early at USC in the spring of 2013 and had a leg up on the competition.
So sooner than later, Coach Clay Helton would choose Browne as the Trojans’ starting quarterback.
As spring practice concluded with the annual spring game Saturday afternoon at the Coliseum, the matter had yet to be settled.
Helton acknowledged that Browne had been in the “lead” to win the job, but praised his primary competition, Sam Darnold, a redshirt freshman from San Clemente, as well as Jalen Greene, a third-year sophomore who was not ruled out of the mix.
