Fleet-footed USC quarterback Sam Darnold allows Trojans to add zone-read plays to offense

LOS ANGELES – Sam Darnold’s coy smile widened.

“I don’t want to give too much away,” he said.

Darnold, the redshirt freshman quarterback from San Clemente High, was asked about some of the zone-read plays he has directed through the first week of USC’s training camp.

“Yeah, it’s a great play,” Darnold said.

Then he elaborated a little more.

The basics give Darnold, who takes the snap out of the shotgun formation, the option to hand off the ball to a running back or keep it and run downfield.

He is fleet footed enough to make some plays with it.
