Ellsworth Kissinger, a quarterback who co-captained the 1956 USC football team, died on April 12 in York, Penn., of complications from Alzheimer's disease. He was 79.
Kissinger was a 3-year (1954-55-56) letterman and a member of the 1954 USC squad that played in the 1955 Rose Bowl. As a senior in 1956, he helped the Trojans go 8-2 and beat rivals Notre Dame and UCLA.
A 3-sport star at William Penn High in York, he became a football coach after his USC days, beginning his career coaching the Eastern York County midget football team for 12 years (1963-74).
