U.S. Soccer backs its policy requiring players to stand for national anthem

The U.S. Soccer Federation's policy requiring its players to stand during the playing of the national anthem remains in place, according to a USSF spokesperson.

Earlier this year, the USSF adopted Policy 604-1, which reads: "All persons representing a Federation national team shall stand respectfully during the playing of national anthems at any event in which the Federation is represented."

The USSF has been vague as to what the penalty would be for a player who is deemed to have violated the policy. The spokesman indicated it would depend on how the player actually engaged in the protest.
