June 29, 1950, Belo Horizonte, Brazil. It’s the 1950 World Cup and on the field at Estádio Independência, you had two teams. On one side, it was England, who was one of the best teams in the world and making their World Cup debut. They were one of the favorites to win the whole tournament. On the other side, it was the United States, a team of part-time, semipro players who were mostly from St. Louis and had jobs on the side, like driving a hearse, serving as dishwashers and teachers, and working as mailmen.
