When the 2013 Gold Cup began in Portland in July 2013, the United States were hoping to keep their train of wins rolling throughout the tournament. They were storming through World Cup qualifying, and they wanted to get off on the right start against Belize. Then-coach Jurgen Klinsmann turned to Chris Wondolowski to lead the team up top. What he found out was that there were plenty of Ws to go around.
Wondolowski began the game with a jersey snafu, as it was noticed immediately that his jersey included an extra W in his last name, spelling “Wondowlowski.
