Bayer Leverkusen were dealt a stunning second-round exit from the DFB Pokal as they fell to third-tier Sportfreunde Lotte on penalties on Tuesday.
The minnows -- who were only promoted to the 3. Liga for the first time in May -- held on with 10 men to force the game to penalties at 2-2 and survived the shootout 4-3 despite missing their first two attempts.
Leverkusen took a 25th-minute lead through Kevin Volland but defender Roberto Hilbert turned the ball into his own net to give the hosts an equaliser two minutes into the second half.
