U.S. Soccer recently partnered with the You Can Play Project on a set of initiatives to ensure equality and inclusion of all athletes, coaches, and fans. As part of this partnership, both the men’s and women’s national teams will wear rainbow-numbered jerseys throughout June—LGBT pride month.
On Friday, U.S. Soccer announced the move on Twitter. Not only will both teams wear the jerseys, but they are also available for purchase, with all proceeds going to the You Can Play Project.
Despite the obvious positive intentions of the partnership—you know, ensuring that everyone is welcome on the field, particularly one on which the United States is competing—the Twitter responses were unsurprisingly negative.
