Inter were unable to correct their first-half mistakes as poor passing and a lack of calm on the ball condemned Spalletti’s side to a 4-1 defeat. Zielinski’s first half rocket was added to after the interval by a Mertens header and a Ruiz double, before a penalty allowed Icardi to cut the deficit to three. Inter gambled at half time, throwing Icardi on in tandem with Martinez in order to pull back the 1-0 deficit, but it didn’t pay off despite the late penalty conversion as an already overloaded Inter midfield suffered further without Politano.
