WEST HARTFORD — A proposal to build luxury apartments in West Hartford stirred up intense neighborhood opposition two years ago, and now a new version is drawing objections as well.
Homeowners in the town’s Berkshire Road and Shadow Lane section are balking at a proposal for 26 apartments on a 1.7-acre property. It would ruin the single-family home character of the neighborhood, they argue, and potentially invite even larger-scale developments in the future.
“The developer is looking for special privileges — spot zoning,” homeowner Ted Mancini said. “And once you allow that in a single-family neighborhood, there’s no ability for the neighbors to say ‘keep out multifamily development’ later on because you’ve already let it in.
