Patrol officers were called to Violet Street at 12:04 a.m. after a caller reported somebody had been shot.

Officers found a crowd gathered around a man lying on his back in a large parking lot at 12 Violet St.

He’d been shot in the chest and wasn’t responsive, police said. Patrol officers provided medical care and he was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 1 a.m.

Detectives are waiting for the medical examiner’s report on precisely how the man died, Lt. David Silverio reported. They found shell casings on the ground near his body, but did not elaborate.
