Waterbury officials are investigating 250 employees who they believe were collecting unemployment benefits during the COVID-19 pandemic while receiving pay from the city, the mayor‘s office said.
The mayor’s office said Wednesday that the claims came while employees were still working for the city and that 28 employees filed claims for two or more months.
“We were quite surprised to see what was happening,” Mayor Neil O’Leary told the city’s board of alders Tuesday, noting that an audit was done to compare those receiving unemployment to the city’s payroll.
“We have opened an investigation on this.
