Twenty-five residents displaced after Vernon fire engulfs two multi-family buildings

A fire engulfed a Vernon multi-family building, before spreading to the residence next door, displacing 25 residents Monday evening.

The fire started at 80-82 Union Street, in the Rockville Section of town, around 5 p.m., Town Spokesman Dave Owens said. First responders and civilians helped make rescues when the alarm first went off, he added.

“Some of the first responding firefighters as well as people from the neighborhood were helping out with setting ground ladders and helping get people out,” Owens said. “There were six apartments at 80-82 Union Street.”

The fire then extended to the building next door at 33 Ward Street, Chief Fire Marshal Dan Wasilewski said, engulfing another four apartments.
