A veteran state trooper has been arrested on assault and child endangerment charges in Southington, state police said.

Trooper Christopher Russell was charged with third-degree assault, disorderly conduct, criminal mischief and risk of injury to a minor, a felony, they said. They learned about the arrest at 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

A supervisor seized Russell’s department-issued guns, badge, identification and police car, and his police powers have been suspended, state police said. An internal affairs investigation is underway.
