A trooper standing on Route 9 in Berlin during a traffic stop involving a wrong-way, drunken driver early Sunday had to dive over the guardrail to prevent injury when a second drunken driver rear-ended his patrol car, state police said.
According to the state police, the crash happened about 4:45 a.m. in the south lanes near Exit 22. Troopers had pulled over the first driver, Andrew Paul Duffy, 55, of Cromwell, saying he was “extremely intoxicated” and drove north in the south lanes “directly towards” a trooper.
The right lane and shoulder of the road were closed, and the patrol cars had their emergency lights flashing.
