State police send backup as Hartford shootings jump to 6-year high in explosion of gun violence

HARTFORD — Fifteen state police investigators will descend on Hartford to help local police address an alarming rise in shootings in the capital city, which already have reached a six-year high 2½ months before the end of the year.

Police have responded to almost 50 shootings with injuries since the beginning of September, including three gun homicides, almost triple the number of incidents in that period than in any of the previous three years.

But the recent surge has only piled on to what was already an unusually high number of shootings to start the year. Through Friday, the city has seen 188 total shootings in 2020 — already 45 more in 10 months than in any of the past six years in their entirety, a Courant analysis of police data found.
