President Donald Trump approved a major disaster declaration for Puerto Rico, an island recouping from the damages of Tropical Storm Isaias in late July.
The approval means an influx of federal funding and assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency, crucial to Puerto Rico’s response to the storm, officials said.
The approval would specifically earmark assistance for municipalities including Aguada, Hormigueros, Mayaguez, and Rincon, located along the island’s eastern region.
The impact of Isaias was particularly acute in areas still recovering from Hurricane Maria in 2017, which caused widespread damage to homes and infrastructure.
FEMA said that the aid following Isaias can come in the form of grants for temporary housing and home repairs and low-cost loans to cover property loss.
